3D Printers

3D Printing has been around since the 80’s. However, only recently has the cost of 3D printers become low enough as to make them accessible to the general consumer. With the fall in cost, rise in availability and increasing number of identified applications, 3D printers are making their way into a diverse range of sectors such as health, food and of course, education.

Maker 3D Printer

3D printers are really fun to use. But it was the day (Okay, couple of days!) that I built my own 3D Printer that really gave me an appreciation towards not just the layers of ingenuity that went into creating what I’ll call the ‘3D-Printing-System’ but also, at time, the familiarity of the parts, pieces and interactions.

3D printers used to be a bit of a ‘Black Box’ for me but once I came to see them as a micro-controller with an SD reader for input and some stepper motors for output (Plus a potentiometer to toggle a menu and an mini LCD for navigation), suddenly the whole system was a lot less scary to use (and a lot less difficult to troubleshoot and repair!)
